Evensong at The Charterhouse
Thursday 18th July 2024
The London Charterhouse is a historic complex of
buildings in Farringdon, near Smithfield market and the Barbican,
which originates from a Carthusian priory founded in 1371.
From 1545 it became one of the great “courtyard houses” of Tudor
London, and was purchased by Thomas Sutton, who established a school
for the young and an almshouse for the old.
The school relocated
to Godalming, Surrey in 1872, and is famous now as “Charterhouse”
public school. The almshouse is still here on the original site, and
we gave Choral Evensong in the historic Jacobean chapel.
It was the day of the Annual Governer's Meeting, and we had a congregation of around 60.
It was a memorable day!
